Ultrasonic Flaw Detection

The ultrasonic inspection method is used for either the detection of subsurface flaws and irregularities in castings, forgings and welds, or for thickness gauging when only one side of component is accessible.

Utilizing the very latest digital equipment our highly skilled technicians manually scan the components using high frequency sound waves.

This highly sensitive method is most versatile since it can be applied to wide range of components of all shapes, sizes and thicknesses.

Typical Applications:

The detection of subsurface flaws and irregularities in castings and forgings
Welds in pressure vessels, pipe lines and structures
Rolled plate for the detection of laminations and other defects
Shafts and other components liable to fatigue cracking
Checking of bonding efficiency between various materials
Measurement of metal thickness from one side only, over a wide range of thicknesses, to
determine the extent of corrosion or erosion

Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT/MT)

One of the most reliable of methods for detecting defects, which are near surface or outcrop to the surface, is magnetic particle inspection.

The advantage of this type of test is its simplicity making it a very cost effective and efficient method of testing ferromagnetic components for defective areas.

Inspections can be carried out on-site with the aid of permanent magnets and electro magnets or in our laboratory using our current flow / magnetic flow fixed bench units.

The detecting medium may be either a dry powder or a liquid containing black or fluorescent indicators to provide a strong contrast to the surrounding material.

Typical applications

Surface cracks in welded assemblies
Heat Treatment cracks in components
Fine defects in the surface of castings for use in aerospace, automotive, oil & gas and medical industries.
Fatigue cracks that have developed in service
Fatigue cracks in chains and lifting gear.

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT / DPT)

Also called as Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT/ DPI), the penetrant testing method is a development of the original oil and whiting method that has been used for many years in the detection of defects which outcrop at the surface of a component.
It can be utilized for both ferrous and non-ferrous materials but is particularly useful when components manufactured from non-ferrous materials and austenitic steels are to be examined and the more discriminating magnetic particle test cannot be employed.

      

It can be used either in a laboratory application or on site.

The detecting medium may be either a red dye that is visible under normal lighting conditions or a fluorescent dye which requires the use of an ultraviolet lamp.

It is particularly useful in the laboratory as a cost effective method of testing small machined components in large batch quantities.

Typical Applications

The detection of outcropping defects in ferrous, non-ferrous castings, forgings and fabrications for use in aerospace, automotive, oil & gas and medical industries.
Fatigue cracks that have developed in service'
Fatigue cracks in chains and lifting gear.
Riveted seams for the detection of leaks.

Radiographic Testing (RT)

This is probably the best known and most widely used method of non-destructive testing. Developed over the course of many years, radiography provides a reliable method of detecting flaws in a wide range of product types including welds, castings, structures and composites.

It is employed predominantly in the fabricating and casting industries for quality control, and will reveal defects such as porosity, inclusions and cracks.

Radiography is a very adaptable method of testing and can be used both in our laboratory facilities and on-site.

Typical applications:

>> Welds in pressure vessels, pipelines and structures
>> Castings in the ‘as cast’ or machined condition
>> Many more Engineering Components
